Supplements Galore

Here’s some shit you need to know:

  • I’m not a doctor, nurse, nutritionist or certified medical anything. Always check with your doctor before taking supplements you may not need. For some of these supplements, having an excess amount in your body could have serious repercussions or they could complicate medical conditions or they could interfere with other medications you’re taking.
  • If you eat garbage all day every day, but expect a whole bunch of supplements to counteract the negative effects of crappy food, I can’t help you or your brain. There are no shortcuts in life. If you want to feel better and look better, you need to eat better. Bad habits don’t ever go away, they can only be replaced by other habits (for more on the science of habits, read this book: The Power of Habit)
  • Drink your water. I use an app called Waterlogged and it was a rude awakening on how dehydrated I have been for my entire life. I’m not going to preach to you the benefits of drinking water because that never worked on me. Instead, go look at the before and after of this woman who drank a gallon of water a day for 30 days: holy shit, water did that?! If you’re a vain motherf*cker like me, that will make you start drinking the amount of water you need. Don’t stop there – plenty of people have put up before and after pictures – Google them for inspiration.
  • I like to start with one supplement at a time, take that for one to two months, then add in a new supplement. That’s based on how my body responds to things, and it works for me. Figure out what works for you or ask your doctor. The way I listed the supplements here is the order in which I incorporated them.

Basically, please be smart. The supplements I take:
amazing grassAmazing Grass Capsules (or powder form, if that’s what you prefer) – I was thrilled to find a way to take my greens in capsule form. I don’t make smoothies on a regular basis (too lazy, sue me) and I was traveling a ton, so the capsules made life easy for me. I stumbled upon them about a year and a half ago because I was looking for ways to eat a more alkaline diet. I read that an alkaline diet helps your skin look better, and ladies and gentleman, IT REALLY F*CKIN DOES. In fact, a lot of you have tried Amazing Grass and you tell me you can’t believe how quickly you notice a difference in your skin. You’ve also told me it helps with your cravings, you have more energy and you sleep better at night. It’s been kind of like a miracle worker for me too. I traveled like crazy the end of last year, including LA four times, NYC three times and constantly being around hundreds of people at events, many times on very little sleep. The perfect cocktail to compromise your immunity, right? Well, I never got sick once. My Amazing Grass capsules came with me everywhere I went and my immunity was incredible. There’s no magic potion here – look at the ingredients. It’s all stuff we would be getting from fruits and veggies, but we’re busy eating pizza and donuts.

Dosage: I take 5 capsules every day per the directions on the product, usually in the morning. Yes, I take them all at the same time. NO, I DO NOT PUT 5 CAPSULES IN MY MOUTH AND ATTEMPT TO SWALLOW THEM AT ONCE. People ask me to be specific about these things and the last thing I want is for someone to put 5 capsules in their mouth, try to swallow them, choke, die and then come back to haunt me. Use your brain please.

Where to get: There’s always Amazon – Amazing Grass Superfood: capsules on Amazon

vitamin d3Vitamin D3 – If I thought my skin couldn’t get any better, these babies leveled things up for me. Vitamin D does lots of things for your body, go read about it! It makes my skin heal so much faster because it supports immunity. I feel like Wolverine. You do want to make sure you don’t overdo it on the vitamin D, so check with your doctor to make sure you need it before you supplement. I live in the goddamn sunshine state and I’m vitamin D deficient. Adding this is when I started to notice my nails getting stronger.

Where to buy: Vitamin D3

Dosage: I take one per day in the morning. Your doctor may say that’s too much for you or too little for you – definitely check on this.
flaxseed oilFlaxseed Oil – Added this because it says “Promotes Healthy Skin, Hair and Nails” like ok, gimme gimme. This and the Evening Primrose Oil make my skin feel softer.

Where to buy: Flaxseed Oil

Dosage: Per the instructions, I take two a day with meals. Check with your doctor.

evening primroseEvening Primrose Oil – I’m pretty sure this sucker is what’s responsible for the insane amount of eyebrow hairs and lip hairs growing in. My eyebrows are so much fuller, it’s almost unreal. The maintenance on my brows used to be once a week and now it’s every couple of days. And my nails are velociraptor talons. You DEFINITELY need to check with your doctor on this one because it thins your blood and it can interfere with other medications you take or conditions you have.

Where to buy: Evening Primrose Oil

Dosage: Per the instructions, I take two a day with meals. Check with your doctor.
ironIron – I rarely eat meat. I’ve always had an aversion to it and that means my iron levels are low. Again, you need to check with your doctor. Too much iron will cause liver damage.

Where to buy: Iron

Dosage: Per the instructions, I take one in the morning. Check with your doctor, damn it.
b12Vitamin B-12 – Again, I rarely eat meat. A vegan friend mentioned this to me, I did my research, I added it.

Where to buy: Vitmain B-12

Dosage: Per the instructions, one per day with a meal. Bet you can guess what I’m going to say….check with your f*ckin doctor.
